Coming Home: A Raw Postpartum & Newborn Session of Twins | Charlottesville, VA

What’s better than a newborn photography session with a brand new baby? A newborn photography session with two new babies! Twins!

Mother of the sweet twin boys, Maddux & Cooper, Julia and I connected through a mutual birth worker friend. She and her partner Christian were just transitioning home when they invited me for a postpartum photography session. As life sometimes goes, one of the babies needed extra support and required a bit of a hospital stay so our original session was delayed. Often parents feel as if they miss the photography window for “newborn” photos if pictures aren’t taken within the first few days of birth. I’m a strong believer, however, that newborn photographs can and should be taken when the entire family is ready—that self care comes first. So that’s what we did.

When the boys were nearly two months old, I spent a relaxed morning with the family in their home’s living room. The parents shared their birth story as I captured their cozy snuggles with the twins. I listened impressed as Julia and Christian explained their tag-team strategy of caring for their babies while ensuring that they were both getting rest. As the boys got hungry, I witnessed their teamwork in action, Julia nursing, Christian following with a bottle. They moved with the confidence of long-experienced parents. The boys, newborn yet a bit removed from the womb, were more alert during our session than perhaps days old babies would have been. I enjoyed getting glimpses of their personalities as their beautiful wide eyes studied the world around them.

As I adore the intricate details of postpartum bellies, each whispering their own unique story, Julia allowed me to capture her beautiful bump. Some of my favorite photographs from our session are of the babies juxtaposed against their first home.
